Tamil Nadu: Protesting ‘imposition of Hindi’, DMK worker sets himself on fire, dies

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), A senior DMK worker allegedly committed self-immolation near the party office at Thajayiyur near Mettur in Salem district on Saturday to protest against the ‘imposition of Hindi’. The police gave this information about the incident.

Police said the deceased was identified as 85-year-old Thangavel. Officials say that Thangavel, a former official of DMK’s farmers’ cell, reached the party office on Saturday morning and raised slogans alleging ‘imposition of Hindi’.

Worker set fire by pouring kerosene

Police said Thangavel allegedly doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire. He said that the people and workers present around tried to save him, but he died on the spot.

expressing grief over the incident Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was saddened to hear about Thangavel’s demise.
