Tharoor takes a jibe at Gehlot for supporting Kharge for Congress President’s post – Fast Hindi News
New Delhi: Rival candidate Shashi Tharoor said that no party functionary is allowed to endorse any candidate competing for the top post in the party. It was a finely directed criticism at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who tweeted in favor of the candidature of Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge.
“There are clear instructions that no party functionary, chief minister or state Congress committee chief should endorse or campaign for any candidate,” Tharoor said at the party office in Bhopal on Friday.
Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge are two contenders for the Congress Presidential election on October 17. The Kerala MP traveled to Bhopal to assist regional party officials and representatives.
According to Tharoor, the Central Election Authority (CEA), which is in charge of conducting fair elections within the party, should take appropriate steps in response to Gehlot’s comments.
He made his remarks a day after Ashok Gehlot posted a video in support of Mallikarjun Kharge on Twitter, hoping that the delegates would choose him as the new party leader.
“Kharge has a rapport with party workers and leaders, and can hold talks with all opposition parties, which is needed today. I hope all the representatives will help Mallikarjun Kharge succeed with an overwhelming majority,” Gehlot said in a video message on his Twitter account.
Gehlot shared the video in response to Tharoor’s claims of an “unequal playing field” as the party elected its first leader who was not Gandhi in more than 20 years.
“There are certainly aspects that indicate an uneven playing field,” Tharoor said, revealing that some leaders had told him they were “under pressure” to support Mr Kharge.
Additionally, he said that during his campaign for internal elections in several states, state party chiefs were “unavailable”.
“I have seen in many places, PCC (State Congress chief), CLP (Congress Legislature Party) leaders and big leaders welcome Mallikarjun Kharge, sit with him, invite people and ask him to be present. Huh. It all happened for one candidate but never happened for me.
Gehlot was not alone in supporting Kharge’s candidature; Manish Tewari, a member of the G-23 group (demanding reforms within Congress), did the same.
