Mob lynching has become common in Pakistan on charges of blasphemy. Now a professional doctor was killed in an encounter on charges of blasphemy and then his body was also snatched by the rioters and he was not even allowed to be buried. The rioters were angry that why the doctor who committed blasphemy was being buried according to Islamic tradition. Doctor Shah Nawaz Kunbar, a resident of Umarkot, was accused of writing a blasphemous post on Facebook. A case was registered against him in the Umarkot police station in this matter. It was alleged that the doctor had fled to Karachi and from there the Umarkot police caught him and brought him to Mirpur Khas. This is the second case within a week of police killing a person in the name of encounter on charges of blasphemy in Pakistan.
Police say that while being brought to Mirpur Khas, the doctor and one of his companions opened fire on the police. In retaliation, the police shot him and the doctor died. His companion managed to escape. Dr. Shah Nawaz issued a video to clarify after a ruckus was created over the comment made on his Facebook account. The doctor said that my Facebook account was hacked and I cannot write anything blasphemous even in my dreams.
Regarding Dr. Shah Nawaz, the district hospital of Umarkot said that he was a good doctor who was missing since September 12. The family members say that he was suffering from mental disorders for some time. The situation worsened due to a comment of the doctor to such an extent that the angry people did not even allow him to be buried. The police handed over his body to the family after the encounter. After this, the family members reached the village with his body in a car. The burial process was going on here when a mob of miscreants attacked and took away the body.
These people burnt the bodies of the doctors. The dead doctor has three sons and a daughter. Apart from this, he has a wife. The family members say that he was suffering from mental problems and was undergoing treatment for the last 4 years. Dr. Shahid, a psychiatrist living in the UK, was treating him. Dr. Shahid is also his nephew. Dr. Shah Nawaz’s family is saddened as he was not even allowed to be buried. It is being said that he was a topper in studies and had passed the medical course with good marks. He was a devoted nationalist and also had faith in Islamic beliefs, but for some time he had become mentally deranged.
