Meanwhile, Mamata government on Tuesday introduced the Aparajita bill with stringent legal provisions to deal with rape and women and child harassment cases in the state, which was passed unanimously, but on the same night when this bill was passed in the assembly in Kolkata, there is news of molestation of a woman in a famous five star hotel there.
Police have arrested two people in this case, one of whom is a resident of Delhi. It is alleged that the woman was allegedly molested during a party at the hotel. According to the complaint filed by the woman, the incident took place around 11.50 pm on Tuesday night. The accused also molested the woman and her sister. It is alleged that both the accused touched them inappropriately and also threatened them with dire consequences if they created a ruckus.
According to the police, one of the arrested persons has been identified as Arun Kumar, a 60-year-old resident of Pitampura area of ​​Delhi, while the other has been identified as Rinku Gupta, 43, from Kolkata. According to police sources, Arun Kumar was staying in a five-star hotel and had called Rinku Gupta to the hotel for a meeting. Later, both of them molested the victim women during a party going on in the hotel.
Let us tell you that the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the anti-rape bill, which provides for death penalty for the culprits if the victim dies or goes into a coma. During the discussion on the bill in the assembly, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Ministers of all those states who have not been able to implement effective laws for the safety of women.
The ‘Aparajita Mahila and Bal Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill 2024’ aims to strengthen the protection of women and children through new provisions related to rape and sexual crimes. The bill proposes to amend the recently passed Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023, the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023 laws and the implementation of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) Act 2012 in West Bengal. The move aims to pave the way for speedy investigation and trial of heinous acts of violence against women and children and to make the punishment harsher.
A two-day special session of the assembly was called to introduce and pass this bill in view of the widespread protests that continued after the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. (With Bhasha inputs)
