Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly demanded the harshest punishment for the culprit of rape and murder of a female doctor in a Kolkata hospital. Let us tell you that the rape-murder case of a doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has shaken the whole country. Protests are taking place all over the country. Under the order of the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now investigating this case. On Friday, a CBI official said, “We have identified at least 30 suspects and have started questioning them.”
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly condemned the incident and said that the culprit should be punished severely. He again clarified his earlier statements on the issue. In fact, many social media users have said that Ganguly had called it a ‘one-time incident’. The former Indian star, who hails from Kolkata, said that his comments were misrepresented.
Sourav Ganguly told reporters, “I said last Sunday, I don’t know how it was understood or interpreted. I have said it before, it is a terrible incident. Now the CBI, the police are investigating the case. What has happened is very shameful. I hope that when the CBI, which is investigating the case, finds the culprit, he should be given strict punishment. The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such a crime again in his life. This is important. The punishment should be strict.”
Earlier, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Kolkata, Ganguly said that as a father of a daughter, he was deeply saddened by the incident. He, however, said that West Bengal and India are considered safe and the entire system should not be judged based on a single incident. “This is a heinous incident. There can be no forgiveness for such a crime,” Ganguly said. He said the authorities must take immediate action. He said that though such incidents can happen anywhere, it is unfortunate that this particular case took place inside a hospital. The former cricketer called for stronger security measures in medical establishments.
The body of a postgraduate female intern doctor was found inside the seminar room of RG Kar State Hospital in North Kolkata on Friday. The preliminary postmortem report revealed that she was sexually assaulted before being killed. Ganguly had said that it would not be right to criticize the entire system on the basis of one incident. Ganguly, the former head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said that he believes women in West Bengal and India are generally safe and such heinous crimes can happen anywhere in the world.
