The world saw the proof of these four words

Mrityunjay Rai

In the olden days, kings used to build huge monuments. In modern times every nation tries to define itself through gigantic projects. Recently handing over the indigenously built warship Vikrant to the Navy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “It presents the proof of hard work, talent, influence and commitment of 21st century India?” What is the spirit behind these words and how has India made them come true through this project? Let us consider through some stories.

Hard work

In the Mahabharata, the weapons with which the Pandavas helped the Pandavas to win in the war, Arjuna had to do a lot of penance and hard work. Mahayogi Vyasa asked Yudhishthira to get the weapons of Indra, Rudra, Varuna, Kubera and Yama to win the war. Yudhishthira sent Arjuna to the Himalayas for this. There he was tested by an ascetic, who was actually Lord Indra. After taking the test he gave his real introduction to Arjuna. After this, when Arjuna asked him for weapons, Indra said, ‘First have darshan of Lord Shiva, then you will get divine weapons.’ Arjuna then pleased Lord Shiva with his penance and obtained a weapon named Brahmashir from him. After this, he pleased Indra and other gods and obtained divine weapons from them. The story of the creation of the 21st century ‘Indian monument’ Vikrant is also very interesting, which took a lot of hard work and some two decades. Vikrant has been built by Cochin Shipyard. Its chairman and managing director Madhu S Nair said, “The journey to build this has not been an easy one for the Cochin Shipyard and the Indian Navy…it was no less than a litmus test.”

Such a huge and important project required patience and commitment. Just like Nachiketa had shown. Nachiketa’s father, Vajashrava, performed a yajna to wish for the fruit. In this he had to donate all his wealth. Nachiketa felt bad to see that his father was donating old and useless cows. He then asked Vajshrava, ‘Who will you give me? On repeated questions, the father said – I give you to death.’ To obey his father, Nachiketa went to Yama, the god of death, but he was not there then. For three days Nachiketa waited for them without eating or drinking. On returning, Yama regretted knowing this and asked Nachiketa to ask for three boons. Nachiketa asked for the first boon that when he returned, his father should be pleased with him. Second, teach me the fire that is going to take to heaven. As the third groom, he wanted to know the secret of death. Nachiketa was tempted by Yama to leave it. But Nachiketa was adamant about knowing the secret of death and eventually Yama had to give up.

India showed the same commitment to Vikrant. During the time it took to build it, there were many technical challenges during that time. Doubts arise at times in such a long project. It was a task that was described as impossible. Yet India did it. If we talk about China, then Shangdong can be considered as its first indigenous aircraft carrier, which it handed over to its Navy in December 2019. In a way, China started making indigenous aircraft carriers from 1985. It took 39 years for it to build the first indigenous aircraft carrier, whereas India has done it in half the time.

Along with resources, talent and skill are also needed to do such a job. Just like Ashtavakra had shown. He was the maternal uncle of Brahmarishi Shvetaketu and the son of Kahod. Once Kahod went to King Janak’s place to earn money. It was the rule of the learned priest of Janak that whoever lost in the debate with him, he would take his life by immersing it in water. The same happened with Kahod. When Ashtavakra came to know about this when he was a little older, he took Shvetaketu and went to King Janak’s place. Due to his young age, Ashtavakra was first stopped by the gatekeeper. But after being satisfied with the answer, the gatekeeper let him go to the court of King Janak. Ashtavakra first satisfied King Janak with his knowledge and then defeated the prisoner. In the end, he treated the prisoner the same way he had done to his father, Kahod. Ashtavakra did the work which the father could not do, he did it on the strength of talent. Today, on the strength of talent, India has also joined the few countries in the world, which have the ability to build their own aircraft carrier. Before India, America, Britain, Russia, China and France had this capability.

The Prime Minister also used the word effect while handing over Vikrant to the Navy. To understand this, let us again return to the story of Mahabharata. After defeating the Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra, Yudhishthira plunged into mourning. Families lost their lives on both sides in the war. Then to calm the mind, Bhishma and Mahayogi Vyasa advised him to perform the Ashwamedha Yagya. Yudhishthira accepted this. After this, he continued to run the administration peacefully for a long time. By the end of this decade, India will be the third largest economic power in the world and China. India is also projected to become the largest economy in the 21st century. But this rise of India will happen only when it has the same strategic power. This is how America became the world’s superpower after World War II. Today China is the second largest economy and also a very big strategic power. India will also have to increase military capability along with economic progress. Vikrant along with Brahmos, Tejas can be considered as an important step in that direction.
