First of all let us know what is Kanwar Yatra. Actually, according to religious scriptures, the tradition of offering Ganga water on the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva is called Kanwar Yatra. This water is carried from a holy place on his shoulder and offered to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan. During this yatra, the devotees walk on foot raising slogans of ‘Bal Bhole’. It is also said that the devotees who travel to Kanwar get the same virtue as the Ashwamedha Yagya.

History of Kanwar Yatra

The history of Kanwar Yatra is very old. According to the scriptures, Parashuram, the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva, did this Kanwar Yatra for the first time in the month of Sawan itself. Only then this Kanwar Yatra was started by the saints and first came to the fore in the year 1960. Not only men but women also participate enthusiastically in this journey. Apart from this, there is another belief that this journey was started by Shravan Kumar. To fulfill the wishes of his parents, Shravan Kumar brought them by sitting in Kanwar and got them bathed in the Ganges in Haridwar. Along with this, Shravan Kumar had also brought Gangajal while coming back and with this water he did the Jalabhishek of Bholenath.

Importance of Kanwar Yatra

Kanwar Yatra is a holy and very difficult journey. During this journey, devotees bring Gangajal from holy places, along with that devotees also take a holy dip in the Ganges at the same holy place. Most of the people perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva with Gangajal from Gaumukh, Gangotri, Rishikesh and Haridwar. One more thing, the kanwar that the devotees carry is made of bamboo. The pots are tied at both the ends in which Gangajal is kept. By filling these pots with Gangajal, the Kanwar Yatra is completed on foot. Apart from this, some people travel barefoot only. So some people fulfill their convenience in bikes, scooters, cycles or even mini trucks. Along with this, during this journey, people also make rest places to give rest to the devotees and also arrange for their food and drink and medical facilities are also provided.

kanwar travel rules

There are also some rules regarding this journey which are very difficult. During the Kanwar Yatra, Kanwariyas cannot keep their Kanwars on the ground. Apart from this, Kanwar cannot be kept under any tree.

Types of Kanwar Yatra

According to the scriptures, three types of Kanwar Yatra have been described. The first is the normal Kanwar Yatra, in which Kanwariya can complete this journey by resting from place to place according to his need and fatigue. The second is Dak Kanvar. In this journey, the Kanwariyas have to keep going continuously till the time the Kanwariya does not perform the Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. Kanwariya cannot rest in this journey. The third is Dandi Kanwar. In this Kanwar Yatra, Kanwariya has to travel from the banks of the Ganges to the place where he has to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva, while punishing him.
