Bhubaneswar: The female friend of an army officer arrested for allegedly misbehaving with the police in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar on Thursday claimed that she was sexually assaulted after being taken into custody. The woman, who was arrested by policemen of Bharatpur police station on Sunday night, was released on bail by the High Court. The woman said that she was returning home with her friend, an army officer, after closing their restaurant at around 1 am when some youths allegedly misbehaved with them. She said that after this they went to Bharatpur police station to seek help.
‘Instead of helping, he abused me’
The woman alleged, ‘When we reached the police station to lodge the FIR, a woman constable was there in plain clothes. We asked her to register the FIR and send a patrol vehicle to catch the miscreants. Instead of helping me, she misbehaved with me.’ The woman, who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Bhubaneswar, said that after some time more policemen reached the police station and asked her friend to write a complaint. The woman alleged, ‘I don’t know what happened, they put him (the army officer) in the lockup.’
‘Made me sit in a room with my hands and legs tied’
The woman further said, ‘When I raised my voice and said that they (police) cannot detain the army officer, two female officers started beating me.’ The woman said that she tried to retaliate and when the female policemen tried to grab her neck, she bit the hand of a female policeman. The woman alleged that the policemen tied her hands and legs and made her sit in a room.
National Commission for Women summoned the report
According to the woman, ‘After some time a male officer opened the door and kicked me several times on my chest.’ The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has sought an action report from the Director General of Police. Let us tell you that a total of 5 policemen, including the Inspector in Charge (IIC) of Bharatpur Police Station, have been suspended in this case. In an official statement, Odisha Police confirmed the suspension of IIC Dinakrishna Mishra, Sub-Inspector Baisalini Panda, ASI Salilamayi Sahu and Sagarika Rath, and Constable Balram Handa.
