Thiruvananthapuram airport remained closed for five hours for Lord Vishnu’s ‘bath’, this is the special reason

The airport changes its flight schedule twice every year in keeping with the age-old tradition of the famous Padmanabha Swamy temple. This temple procession passes near the runway here.

‘‘arattu’’ With the procession, the Alpasi festival came to an end on Tuesday. Airport authorities said flight services were suspended for five hours from 4 pm to 9 pm. At least 10 flights of major carriers, including IndiGo, Air India Express and Air Arabia, were canceled at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, airport sources said. This was done because services were suspended from 4 pm to 9 pm.

According to sources, ‘Arattu Mandap is near the runway where the idols of the temple are kept for a while as a ritual during the procession. As per the temple tradition, the idols of the deities of the temple are taken twice a year for bathing in the sea which is behind the airport. This procession has been passing through this route even before the airport was built in 1992.
