Tripura election: BJP cut ticket, then MLA resigned, now in fray as independent

Agartala. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Tripura Atul Debbarma on Tuesday said that he has resigned from the party after being denied ticket for the upcoming elections. He filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate for his home constituency Krishnapur in Khowai district. He said, “I have already sent my resignation to the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and resigned from the BJP.”

Well-known doctor Debbarma said, ‘I had left my job in Delhi. If I had not contested the last assembly elections, I could have continued my job. Staying away from my family living in Delhi, I am working for the people of Tripura. The BJP has fielded local tribal leader Vikas Debbarma for Krishnapur assembly constituency. Atul Debbarma claimed that the party did not tell him why ‘my name was not considered’ for the seat.

Assembly elections will be held on February 16
Debbarma said, “So I filed my nomination papers to contest from Krishnapur constituency as an independent candidate.” It is noteworthy that Tamojit Nath, in-charge of BJP’s medical cell from Dharmanagar in North Tripura, and several leaders have left the party after their names were not found in the list of candidates for the February 16 assembly elections.
