The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust NGOs have not been banned just like that, but they were already watched by all government agencies. In the year 2020, an inter-ministerial committee was constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The people present in the committee were given the task of keeping an eye on the three trusts belonging to the AAP Gandhi family i.e. Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. It was learned that these 3 trusts allegedly violated PMLA, FCRA and IT Act. Officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, CBI, ED and Income Tax Department were engaged to investigate these trusts.
Apart from Sonia Gandhi, these people were also involved
Apart from Sonia Gandhi, many people were involved in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. These included MP Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Suman Dubey and Ashok Ganguly. On the other hand, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust included Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Ashok Ganguly, Banshi Mehta and Deep Joshi. It is said that even from the Melinda Gates Foundation, huge donations used to come to this NGO.
BJP said- Gandhi family took donation from China
Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda alleged that a huge amount was also taken as donation from China in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. This was at that time when Rahul Gandhi was constantly attacking the Modi government regarding the issue of Ladakh and used to ask them questions. Making a big attack on Congress, Nadda said that Congress has no right to speak on India’s security after receiving donations from China for the foundation. This is a secret relationship between Congress and China. These people take money from China and invest it in studies which is not in the interest of India at all. The public wants to know what study was being done with the money.
Mehul Choksi among those who donated to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation
The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that the Gandhi family had given money to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation by fugitive Mehul Choksi, former Yes Bank CEO Rana Kapoor and foreign embassies. The BJP also alleged that foreign receipts were also exchanged between RGF and RGCT. This is against the rules of FCRA. According to FCRA, the central government can ban anyone from taking foreign currency if it feels that it is proving to be a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of India. Let us tell you that despite being a private trust, the office of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation is located in Jawahar Bhawan which itself is built on a government land.
