‘Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the state by November 9’, Uttarakhand CM Dhami reiterated his resolve

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Tuesday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state before the State Foundation Day on November 9. During a program, the Chief Minister said that after the implementation of anti-copying law, anti-conversion law, anti-riot law etc., today Uttarakhand is being recognized in the whole country as a disciplined state with zero tolerance towards crime.

CM Dhami said, ‘In the field of women empowerment, we have also passed the Uniform Civil Code bill in our assembly. Along with the passage of the bill, we have also got the approval of the President. We have set a deadline that before 9 November 2024, which is our state foundation day, we will implement the bill that we have passed to implement a uniform law for all sections, all sects, and every person living in the state.’

He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, work is being done continuously to strengthen the judicial infrastructure in the entire country including Uttarakhand. In the last ten years, the Modi government has spent more than Rs 8000 crore for judicial infrastructure. Dhami said all these things on Tuesday while laying the foundation stone and performing Bhoomi Pujan of the new building of Bar Association, Dehradun in the judicial complex (old jail), Dehradun.

This is not the first time that Dhami has promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code by November 9. Last month, the CM had said, “We have taken many such decisions which the previous governments have not implemented till date due to vote bank politics. The UCC (Uniform Civil Code) Bill will be implemented soon. We have resolved to implement it in the state before November 9.”

The BJP government had introduced the Uniform Civil Code Bill in a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6 this year and it was passed by a majority a day later on February 7. CM Dhami had then said that the passing of the Uniform Civil Code Bill was a historic day in the history of Uttarakhand.

The aim of the Uniform Civil Code is to establish a set of uniform personal laws that apply to all citizens regardless of religion, gender or caste. This will cover aspects such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also advocated for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in his Independence Day address to the nation on August 15, saying that India must now move towards a secular civil code to free the country from religion-based discrimination. PM Modi called for a discussion on the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code across the country and asked people to give their suggestions.

Let us tell you that this new state was formed by separating from Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000 during the central government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Earlier its name was Uttaranchal, which was changed to Uttarakhand on 1 January 2007.
