Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and clarified on the name plate controversy. Singh assured them to remain firm on the ideology and principles of the party. Earlier, Singh had also given clarification to Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal on this issue.

Vikramaditya Singh had recently said that it would be mandatory for street vendors to display their identity cards at their shops. There was a controversy within the party over his comment. The state government later clarified that no such decision has been taken.

Sources said Singh met Kharge and conveyed his firmness towards the ideology and principles of the Congress. Singh said he has accepted the Congress high command’s concerns about ideology after his recent comments on the issue of street vendors. Singh refuted the notion that the Uttar Pradesh model was being followed in his state.

Singh’s comments come a day after he was rebuked by the top Congress leadership over his remarks on mandatory display of names by street vendors. He has been told that no one is allowed to go against the policies and ideologies of the party.

Earlier, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal had held a meeting with Singh on Friday. He told Singh that the party believes in Rahul Gandhi’s mantra of fighting hatred with love. Himachal’s PWD and Urban Development Minister said, “I apprised Venugopal ji of the real situation and addressed his concerns about ideology. Assured him that we are dedicated and loyal soldiers of the party and will not do anything that Be against the party line.”

Asked about the claim that the Uttar Pradesh model is being followed in Himachal Pradesh, Singh said it has been misrepresented in the media. Singh said that the media presented it as a misunderstanding. Last Wednesday, a Himachal Pradesh minister had told reporters that it would be mandatory for street vendors, especially those selling food items, to display their identity cards at their shops. He had said that the decision was inspired by a similar directive announced by the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government.

Singh had said that the decision was taken in view of the apprehensions expressed by many locals about the increasing number of migrants in the state. He also faced condemnation from several leaders of the India Bloc when he posted his comments on Facebook. Dissociating itself from Singh’s comments, the state government said in a statement that it had not taken any such decision.
