Imphal: At least two rural volunteers were killed and two injured when unidentified gunmen attacked a camp in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Tuesday. Police gave this information. The incident took place at the camp located near Kadangband village in Lamshang area adjoining Imphal West district. A police official said, “After the attack by unidentified gunmen, the village volunteers retaliated, resulting in the death of two village volunteers while two were injured. After the retaliatory action, the retreating attackers regrouped and again “Attacked. Firing continues.”
He said that after the firing started, many women, children and elderly people of Kadangband and neighboring Kautruk villages fled towards safe areas. The official said additional security personnel have been sent to the area to bring the situation under control. The injured person has been taken to Imphal Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.
Kautruk and Kadangband villages have been badly affected by ongoing ethnic violence, with multiple gunfights between armed groups. More than 180 people have been killed since caste violence broke out in the state in May last year. (PTI)
