We sent him to work, the hospital handed over the dead body of the daughter; the pain of Kolkata victim’s father

The whole country is angry over the incident of brutality and murder of a trainee doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. People are protesting in various ways and demanding justice. Meanwhile, the victim’s father has told some such things related to his daughter that any person can become emotional after hearing them.

In an interview with The Guardian, the father said that he comes from a poor family and his daughter had a very difficult upbringing. The father said, “My daughter worked very hard to become a doctor. All she did was study, study and study… All our dreams were shattered overnight. We had sent her to work and the hospital handed us her dead body. Everything was over for us.” He said, “My daughter will not come back. I will never be able to hear her voice or laugh again. Now all I can focus on is getting justice for her.”

On August 9, the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Police said a preliminary post-mortem report confirmed rape before murder. A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested in connection with the crime the next day. The Calcutta High Court later handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The doctor was raped and then murdered. The manner in which the case was handled by authorities has since led to protests and strikes by doctors across India.

The victim’s father said that it was his only daughter’s lifelong dream to pursue a career in medicine. At the age of 31, she overcame many obstacles to secure one of the approximately 107,000 seats in India’s medical colleges. The parents worked very hard to fulfill their daughter’s dream. The girl’s father is a tailor and he educated his daughter with the money he earned. The father recalled, “My daughter used to say, ‘Papa, it is a good thing to become a doctor and help others. What do you think?’ I said: ‘Okay, do it. We will help you.’ And now see what happened.”

Meanwhile, the accused’s mother-in-law has claimed the involvement of more people in the incident. She says that Sanjay Roy could not have done this alone. Speaking to news agency ANI on Monday, the mother-in-law said that the relationship between her daughter and Sanjay Roy was strained. She said that Sanjay Roy beat up her daughter, against whom a complaint was lodged with the police.

The woman said, “My relationship with Sanjay was also very strained.” She further said, “Everything was fine for 6 months in the beginning. When my daughter was 3 months pregnant, she got an abortion done. He beat her and also lodged a police complaint. After this my daughter started falling ill, I bore all the expenses of her medicines. Sanjay was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want. I will not say anything about the crime. He cannot do this alone. He cannot do this alone.”
