‘Elevate the throne that the people come’
Apart from Jayaprakash Narayan, Acharya Kripalani, Vijay Laxmi Pandit, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Morarji Desai and others were going to address the rally. On that day, JP started the speech with those immortal lines of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar – ‘Elevate the throne that the people come’. The entire Ramlila Maidan was listening to those leaders very quietly. Emergency was imposed in the country only on the night of that rally. Soon after this announcement, several leaders were taken into custody overnight. Jaiprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani etc. were arrested.
How did Arun Jaitley dodge the police?
With the signing of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, emergency came into force in the country. The next morning the whole country heard the message in the voice of Indira Gandhi on the radio. He said- ‘There is no need for the common people to be afraid of this.’ In order not to spread the news of the rally of June 25 at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, the power of newspaper offices located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in Delhi was cut off at night. Recalling that night, Arun Jaitley, the top leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, used to say – I reached my Naraina home at around 11-12 o’clock after the rally at Ramlila Maidan. I was then studying in the Law Center of Delhi University. At around 2 o’clock in the night, the policemen knocked on the door of my house. My father opened the door of the house. The policemen were telling father that they have come to arrest me. I have heard all this. By the time my father was talking to him, I ran away from there. During that time former Union Minister Vijay Goel, senior BJP leader Prof. Many political activists including Vijay Kumar Malhotra, socialist leader Rajkumar Jain were arrested by the police.
Memorable gatherings of Ramlila Maidan
As soon as the mention of the rally of Ramlila Maidan on June 25, 1975 comes to mind, all the rallies and other meetings whose organization has given it a different place come to mind. The permanent stage at Ramlila Maidan was built only in 1962. Actually, Queen Elizabeth of Britain had come on a tour of India. A public meeting was to be organized in his honor at Ramlila Maidan. Just then, a permanent platform was made somewhere. Earlier only a temporary platform was made here. Here, after the death of the first President of the country, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, condolence meetings were held in his memory. People were crying while attending the meeting. In Pandit Nehru’s condolence meeting, representatives of Japanese and Soviet Union won the hearts of the people by speaking in Hindi. Here on November 26, 1974, the public meeting held in honor of Brezhnev, the summit leader of the Soviet Union, was also very effective. The Indo-Soviet Union friendship was at its peak then.
