The scale of development of any area is first determined by its roads. A network of good roads is being laid in India at a very fast pace. Today, roads are being built in every village of the country, this is creating new employment opportunities. It has become very easy for the common man to access markets for business. Many projects are going on for new highways in the country. But, do you know what is the difference between National Highway and GT Road? Who maintains National Highway and GT Road? Let us understand the difference between the two.

  1. National Highway which you call NH in simple language. At present, a network of highways is being laid rapidly in the country. Work is going on on many highway projects by the Government of India. The thing for you to know here is that the work of building highways is done by the Government of India and its maintenance is also under the government. National Highway connects one place to another and passes through many states.
  2. At the same time, you must have heard about GT Road. It is different from the National Highway. It is also known as Grand Trunk Road. It is one of the oldest roads in India and this road goes from Delhi to Kolkata. GT Road is about 2500 kilometers long. GT Road connects many important roads of North India.
  3. It is said that this road was built by Sher Shah Suri during the Mughal period. During that time, this road was called Sur Marg. However, this road was rebuilt again during the British period. And it was named Grand Trunk Road.
  4. By the way, let us tell you that the Grand Trunk Road is classified as a national highway but it predates the formal national highway system. This road was developed during the Mughal period and was redesigned and named Grand Trunk Road during British rule. In contrast, National Highway (NH) roads are part of the formal national highway network developed and maintained by the Government of India.
  5. The GT Road passes through the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
  6. Let us tell you that there is no formal numbering system for GT Road, while NH is numbered sequentially. GT Road was managed by the colonial Public Works Department, while NH roads are maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a government agency. At many places in India, this GT Road has been converted into National Highways. It is indicated by National Highway 1, 2 and 91 at different places.
  7. The main difference between these two is that the National Highway connects many cities of the country to the states. Which is spread over a large geographical area across India. On the other hand, GT Road is a route that connects Delhi to Kolkata. The National Highway is maintained by the Government of India. On the other hand, GT Road is under the state governments.
