The wave of protest against the heinous incident that took place inside the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal is continuously increasing. The protests that started in Kolkata are now going on across the country. Today, the Supreme Court also reprimanded the Mamata Banerjee government of Bengal in the matter. After the Kolkata incident, the state government is on the back foot and is facing extraordinary pressure. From declaring the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor as suicide to action against protesters, construction work near the crime scene and threatening notices to critics, these are the 10 mistakes of the Mamata government, which are now proving to be costly for them.
The public outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar has put the Trinamool Congress and its supremo Mamata Banerjee in great trouble. More than 10 days have passed since this heinous incident and protests are getting more intense across the country. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court reprimanded the West Bengal government. The apex court reprimanded the West Bengal government for its alleged lethargic and careless attitude in this matter. The court said that the state government should ensure security. The court said that a case should be registered against the accused who created a ruckus in RG Kar Hospital and they should be arrested.
On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee has termed this anger and resentment as a political conspiracy. However, the allegations and unresolved aspects on Mamata government directly point towards the mistakes of her government. Since the heinous crime that took place on 9 August at RG Kar Medical College, at least 10 incidents and mistakes have come to light, which expose the lapses of Mamata Banerjee administration and Kolkata Police.
Attempts to hide the murder
From the initial investigation to the attempt to hide the truth about the heinous crime committed in RG Kar Hospital, the shortcomings of Kolkata Police are evident. An attempt was made to suppress the rape-murder of the female trainee doctor by terming it a suicide. The victim’s parents alleged that they were informed by the hospital administration over the phone that their daughter had committed suicide. However, finding the half-naked body of the female doctor in the seminar room of the hospital confirms that there was a deep conspiracy behind this horrific incident and the hospital administration tried to downplay it by terming it a suicide.
Not only this, there were many deep injury marks on the victim’s body. Blood was flowing from her eyes, mouth and private parts. These are the reasons that show that the lady doctor was molested. Later, the post-mortem report also revealed that the lady doctor was raped by more than one person and then brutally murdered.
The parents kept waiting and the funeral was done in a hurry
When the victim’s parents were informed, they immediately rushed to the hospital. They were not allowed to see their daughter’s body for three hours. The victim’s mother revealed that when they went to see the daughter’s body, her pants were open and there were deep injury marks on her body. She told the hospital administration officials that this could not be a suicide. The victim’s father alleged that the daughter’s body was cremated in a hurry. He said that there were already three bodies at the crematorium, but my daughter’s body was cremated first. The parents also accused the Kolkata Police of hastily completing the investigation.
Negligence in investigation
The police first told the victim’s parents that she had committed suicide, but it was later revealed that she was raped and murdered. The gross mismanagement following this gruesome incident and subsequent attempts to hush up the case have raised serious questions about the police’s credibility and commitment to justice. The police have also been accused of destroying evidence, including the diary kept by the victim. The victim’s father alleged that a page of the diary was torn.
Parents were hurt by the announcement of compensation
CM Mamata Banerjee’s offer of Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim’s family angered the parents. The victim’s father said that they only wanted justice, not compensation. He said that he would not accept compensation for his daughter’s body under any circumstances. He said, “The Chief Minister roams the streets and talks at length demanding justice for my daughter. But, at the same time, she tries to suppress the public anger. Why is she adopting hypocrisy? Is she afraid of people? We have questions that must be answered.”
Construction work near the crime scene
Soon after the brutal incident at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College, when intense protests started, construction work started near the spot. A part of the wall of the bathroom adjoining the seminar hall was broken. The protesters alleged that this was an attempt to destroy evidence. They asked whether it was appropriate to suddenly start renovation work during such an important investigation?
Instead of taking action against the principal, he will be given a good posting
The Mamata Banerjee government has also been accused of protecting RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh. The Mamata Banerjee government is being severely criticized for this too. No disciplinary action was taken against Sandip Ghosh. Instead, he was transferred to the prestigious Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital just hours after his resignation.
Allegations of deep conspiracy in the hospital
Other doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital suspected chaos after the rape-murder heinous incident and immediately started protesting. Instead of finding out the purpose behind this protest, the state government accused the doctors of harassing the public by going on strike. Instead of showing sensitivity and addressing the long-standing grievances about women’s safety, safe working environment, the Mamata government pressured the doctors to return to work immediately.
Efforts to destroy evidence on the night of August 14
A few days after the rape and murder, when protests were being held across the city of Kolkata for justice, the peaceful protest suddenly turned into chaos on the night of August 14. Hundreds of people reached the hospital and started pelting stones and creating a ruckus. The ruckus continued outside the hospital for about 40 minutes. During this time, the staff and patients inside the hospital were in a state of panic. On the other hand, Kolkata Police was accused of being lax in the matter. However, 14 policemen were injured in this entire uproar. The BJP had alleged that the vandalism was done by “TMC goons” who wanted to erase evidence from the crime scene.
Objectionable statement of leader, notice issued to hundreds
After the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital on the night of August 14, the Kolkata Police Commissioner directly blamed the media. Further, Trinamool Congress minister Udayan Guha’s threat to “break the fingers” of those accusing Mamata Banerjee added fuel to the fire. Battling criticism, the Kolkata Police took action against several people, including social media influencers, YouTubers, students and doctors, who “revealed the pictures or identity” of the junior doctor. Even a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP was not spared. The Kolkata Police sent two notices to Sukhendu Shekhar Roy. According to the Indian Express report, a total of 280 people from West Bengal and other states were issued notices and a 23-year-old student from the state was arrested in connection with the protest.
Mamata came on the road, defending Kolkata Police
After the outrage over the rape-murder case in Kolkata grew and the case was handed over to the CBI, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself came out on the streets. She demanded death penalty for the culprits involved in the incident. She also defended the Kolkata Police, which was earlier investigating the case. Mamata Banerjee said in a statement that the Kolkata Police has solved 90 percent of the case. Now the CBI only has to hang the culprits. She also gave the CBI a week’s time for this work.
