New Delhi: The Government of India has announced to confer the country’s highest civilian honor ‘Bharat Ratna’ on former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur. Karpuri Thakur was also called ‘Jananayak’. He has been the Chief Minister of Bihar twice. He was considered a leader who gave voice to the interests of the backward classes. He was also known for his simplicity.
Born in Samastipur
Karpoori Thakur was born on 24 January 1924 in Samastipur. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar twice and could not complete his tenure even once. While being the Chief Minister, he had cleared the way for reservation for backward classes in Bihar. He never allowed himself to be distracted from his resolve. For this he also had to sacrifice his government. He also abolished the requirement of English in the matriculation examination of Bihar Board.
Took part in the freedom movement in 1940
Born in Pitoujhiya village of Samastipur, Karpoori Thakar passed the Patna Matriculation examination in 1940. At that time the country was a slave. After passing the matriculation examination, Karpoori Thakur jumped into the freedom movement. He chose the path of socialism and joined the socialist movement with Acharya Narendra Dev. Took part in Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement in 1942 and also had to go to jail.
Won first election in 1952, never lost again
Karpoori Thakur won the first assembly elections in 1952. After this he never lost the assembly elections. He was known for his simplicity. He kept social issues at the forefront of his agenda. He was known for strongly raising public issues in the House. Karpoori Thakur also used to put the government in the dock regarding the incidents of atrocities and atrocities on the weaker sections of the society.
First non-congress chief minister
He was the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Bihar. For the first time, he was the Chief Minister from December 1970 to June 1971. He became CM in the government of Socialist Party and Bharatiya Kranti Dal. After becoming CM, he gave reservation to backward people in government jobs. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar for the second time from June 1977 to April 1979 in the Janata Party government.
