Why is Lithuania now under threat of Russian attack, what is the October plan; why is there a tussle between the two neighbours?

Ever since the war between Russia and Ukraine started, Russia’s neighboring country Lithuania has been on Moscow’s target. Now there is news that Russia may launch a massive attack on Lithuania in October because Lithuania is supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia. According to international media reports, Lithuania has planned to shift its citizens to other countries due to fear of Russian attacks. The report says that by October Lithuania will complete the plan to shift its citizens to safe places. Lithuania is a country located on the shores of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. It separated from the USSR in 1990 and became an independent country.

On the other hand, Russia, which is currently troubled by Ukraine’s rapid attacks, will also be able to execute its plan to attack Lithuania by October. Currently, Russian defense officials are planning an attack on Lithuania. In fact, the bitterness in relations between Lithuania and Russia started in 2022, when the European Union imposed several sanctions on Russia. Then Lithuania decided to stop the transportation of some goods through its territory to the Russian region Kaliningrad. This decision not only increased the tension between Moscow and the West, but Lithuania also started becoming a thorn in the eyes of Russia.

Now that it has become clear that neighboring countries like Lithuania and Latvia are helping Ukraine in the war against Russia, the Kremlin has warned that it will retaliate against those helping Ukraine. Since then, Lithuania has been fearing a Russian attack. The way the Russian army has recently strengthened its military presence in Belarus, its closest and wartime ally, has further increased the threat to Lithuania and Latvia. It has also already come to light that on one hand there is the presence of the Wagner army in Belarus, and on the other hand several dozen Russian nuclear weapons are also deployed, which can target many European countries including Lithuania.

Meanwhile, like residents of dozens of eastern Lithuanian towns bordering Belarus, residents of Barvoniske have fled their hometown in recent months, fearing Russia could invade their country as the war on Ukraine continues. Lithuania is a NATO member country with a population of about 3 million. Lithuania is also concerned that its capital, Vilnius, is just 50 km from Belarus. In view of this, Lithuanian authorities have increased border security and accelerated the construction of border fencing.
