New Delhi: Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is being celebrated across the country today on 9th January. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was started in the year 2003. Let us tell you that on January 9, 1915, President Mahatma Gandhi returned to his country India from South Africa. After this Gandhiji toured the country and then started movements for independence. In such a situation, the day Gandhiji came to India from South Africa is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in our country. This day is remembered by the people of the Indian community living abroad for their contribution towards India.

What is history?

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas started in the year 2003. At that time there was Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government in the country. Atal ji had announced to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in the year 2002 itself, after which Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas was celebrated for the first time in 2003. After this, every year a three-day program was organized on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. In the year 2015, when Narendra Modi was in power at the Centre, it was decided to celebrate it every two years by making slight changes in it. On this day, a program is organized by the government to honor those Indians who have brought glory to India in foreign countries.

Why is it necessary?

It is very important to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas. This provides a platform to NRIs to connect with the people of their country. Apart from this, the overseas Indian community also connects with their country, their government and its citizens. At the same time, investment opportunities also get promoted by this program. Besides, good opportunities are also available abroad for the youth living in India. This is the reason why Atal ji foresaw the potential of NRIs and the benefits of connecting them with India and started such a programme.
