Why Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe praised former Prime Minister Nehru

Sri Lanka President On Nehru: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe praised India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of India’s independence. He said that I saw his first speech after independence ‘Tryst with Destiny’ ‘Tryst With Destiny’ on YouTube. India’s 75th Independence Day is a tribute to him.

Ranil Wickremesinghe said that I want to read a part of Pandit Nehru’s speech at the time of India’s independence. He read, “The achievement we celebrate today is only a step away…the gateway to new possibilities, great victories, possibilities and defeats, await us in the future. Are we so brave and Wise enough to seize this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?”

What did President Wickremesinghe say?
Wickremesinghe said, “Whatever India is today is because of Nehru. What you are reaping today is the sown of Nehru. India today is on the way to become the world’s superpower. If so, then the coming generations will see that India will be playing a historic role on the world stage. This in itself will be a tribute to Pandit Nehru.”

Apart from this, Singhe also mentioned the former Prime Minister of India, Pandit Atal Bihari Bajpayee. He said, “One day Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpai, the then big opposition leader of India, called Nehru half Churchill and half Chamberlain, in the evening when both met at a program, Nehru put his hand on Bajpayee’s shoulder and said that Today you gave a wonderful critical speech. And then he went ahead with a light pat on his back. It was a sign of his great personality.”

India gave surveillance aircraft to Sri Lanka
Wickremesinghe was speaking during the handing over of a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy at a ceremony in Sri Lanka on Monday. Vice Admiral SN Ghormade, Vice Chief of the Indian Navy, along with Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay in Colombo handed over maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy at a Sri Lanka Air Force base at Katunayake near Colombo International Airport.

Admiral Ghormade is on a two-day visit to Sri Lanka. Sources in New Delhi said that the aircraft is being delivered to Sri Lanka from the Indian Navy to help meet the immediate security needs of Sri Lanka.
