The Enforcement Directorate i.e. ED has named Robert Vadra (husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi) for the first time in the money laundering case going on against Sanjay Bhandari. The agency has filed charges against Robert Vadra in the money laundering case. ED has alleged that Robert Vadra renovated a property acquired through money laundering in London and also stayed in it. After these allegations, it is believed that Robert Vadra may have to face difficulties once again.
What is the whole matter?
In the year 2020, a prosecution complaint was filed by the ED against Sanjay Bhandari, his 3 offshore entities, Sanjeev Kapoor and Anirudh Wadhwa. After the process was over, LD Special Court had declared Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive. Authorities in the UK have also ordered the extradition of Sanjay Bhandari but he has filed an appeal challenging the extradition order before the UK High Court. In this case, assets worth Rs 26.55 crore of Sanjay Bhandari kept in India have also been attached.
Supplementary prosecution complaint filed
The Enforcement Directorate has filed a supplementary prosecution complaint in the Rouse Avenue court against UAE NRI Cheruvathur Chakutty Thampi (CC Thampi) and KK citizen Sumit Chaddha. ED investigation revealed that Sanjay Bhandari has several undisclosed foreign income and properties, including 12 Bryanston Square (London) and 6 Grosvenor Hill Court (London). These properties are proceeds of crime as per the provisions of PMLA, 2002. ED told that C.C. Thampi and Sumit Chadha have been found involved in concealing and using these proceeds of crime.
What is the allegation against Vadra?
ED has made many big allegations in its charge sheet. The agency has said that Robert Vadra not only renovated the above mentioned property at 12 Bryanston Square London through Sumit Chadha, but also lived in the same. Apart from this, Robert Vadra and CC Thampi purchased large tracts of land in Faridabad and had financial transactions with each other. ED has also alleged in the investigation that CC Thampi is a close associate of Robert Vadra.
