Will Uniform Civil Code be implemented? Government told Rajya Sabha – 22nd Law Commission can consider
He informed that the government had requested the 21st Law Commission of India to examine various issues related to the Uniform Civil Code and give its suggestions. Rijiju said that but the term of the 21st Law Commission ended on 31 August 2018.
The Law Minister said, ‘As per the information received from the Law Commission, the matter related to the Uniform Civil Code can be taken up by the 22nd Law Commission for its consideration. That’s why no decision has ever been taken on implementing the Uniform Civil Code.
The current Law Commission was constituted on February 21, 2020, but its chairman and members were appointed in November last year, months before the term of the commission was to expire.
The 21st Law Commission examined various issues related to the Uniform Civil Code and uploaded a consultation paper titled ‘Reforms in Family Law’ on its website for wider discussion.
Uniform Civil Code has been a major election plank of the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was one of the major election promises of the BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Some BJP-ruled states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat have taken steps towards implementing it.
