Bangladesh is the host of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is to be held in October. Bangladesh is currently facing violence and security challenges due to anti-government movements. After the student revolt, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. In such a situation, the organization of the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh is in danger. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to host the Women’s T20 World Cup. However, the BCCI has rejected this offer.
Zimbabwe showed interest
After India’s refusal, Zimbabwe has now found an ‘opportunity in disaster’. Zimbabwe has shown interest in hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. What will be the stance of Bangladesh and the International Cricket Council (ICC) on this? It remains to be seen. According to ESPNcricinfo’s report, Zimbabwe wants to host the World Cup. Zimbabwe has successfully hosted the last two ODI World Cup qualifiers (2023 and 2018). Two new stadiums are being built here. This is the reason why Zimbabwe is taking more interest in hosting the tournament.

Sri Lanka and UAE are also options
After BCCI withdrew from hosting the tournament to be held from October 3 to October 20, the ICC has options in the form of Sri Lanka and UAE. However, BCB has asked the ICC for some more time before taking a final decision. It is expected that the ICC can take a decision in this regard on August 20, when an online meeting of the directors is scheduled. It is being told that the ICC had to take a decision on the Women’s World Cup by August 15.
Why did BCCI reject the offer?
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in an interview that we were offered to host the World Cup but I clearly refused. This is the rainy season here and more importantly, we have to host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. I do not want to give anyone the wrong message that we want to host two consecutive World Cups. India has to play a series against Bangladesh at home from September 19. Regarding Bangladesh’s tour of India, Shah said, “We have not spoken to them (Bangladesh officials). A new government has taken charge there. They can contact us or I will contact them. The Bangladesh series is very important for us.
