According to the United Nations, India has the largest contribution of 177 million people in the world’s population reaching from seven billion to eight billion. Whereas China is at number two, which added 73 million people to it.
It is estimated that by next year India will overtake China to become the most populous country in the world. The ‘Population Foundation of India’ (PFI) said that this milestone was not seen as a problem but as an opportunity to better plan for India and provide a healthier and happier life to the people across the world. should go. The PFI said, ‘Some sections have been expressing apprehension that overpopulation will be a problem for governance. However, it should be seen as an opportunity.
Poonam Mutreja, executive director of PFI, said, “We know that population growth around the world is stabilizing. It took 12 years for the world population to reach seven to eight billion, while it will take about 15 years to reach nine billion by 2037, which shows that the pace of population growth is slowing down. “We must now focus on eliminating the unmet need for contraception so that women can decide whether they want to have children and if so, when, how much and at what intervals,” he said.
Mutreja said that the unnecessary conflict between population and limited resources should be stopped. He said, ‘Skilled population is a strength and we should see the population as a creator of resources.’ Akhila Shivdas, executive director of the Center for Advocacy and Research, said that there is no need to worry too much about the world’s population being eight billion. But problems arising due to increase in population such as livelihood crisis and side effects on marginalized women and weaker sections should also not be ignored.
