The last bet of Yakub’s lawyers on Mercy Petition is in vain
On 26 July 2015, some politicians and civil society people gave an application to the then President Pranab Mukherjee asking him to reconsider the Mercy petition. It also included former Supreme Court judges HS Bedi and Markandey Katju, Hussain Zaidi, senior advocate and former law ministers Ram Jethmalani, Asaduddin Owaisi, R Jagannathan and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan. All of them demanded implementation of the report of Shri Krishna Commission. After this, Memon’s lawyers, playing the last bet, demanded a stay on the hanging for 14 days. The logic behind this was that there should be a gap of 14 days between the rejection of the mercy petition by the President and the execution. However, this bet did not work and at 2.30 pm, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court heard the matter. The court, rejecting all the arguments of Memon’s lawyers, upheld the execution and on the morning of July 30, Yakub Memon was hanged.
