International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2022: ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ is celebrated every year on 25 November to prevent violence against women and to make women aware around the world. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there was a decrease in traditional crimes against women and children during the lockdown in the year 2020, but there was definitely a 28 percent increase in criminal cases in the country. According to NCRB, in 2020, about 77 cases of sexual abuse were registered daily in the country and a total of 28,046 cases have been registered. While 3,71% of violence against women worldwide,503 Cases have been registered which were 4,05,326 in 2019. This day is celebrated every year with the aim of changing the thinking of people and giving women their rights.

What is the history of this day?
Patria Mercedes on 25 November 1960, The dictatorship of the Dominican ruler Rafael Tujilo was opposed by Maria Argentina and Antonio Maria Teresa. Then as per the order of that ruler, all the three sisters were brutally killed. Since then, in 1981, activists from Latin America and the Caribbean Feminist Encentros ordered November 25 to combat violence against women and to celebrate the three sisters’ death anniversary. On 17 December 1999, the United Nations adopted this day as an official resolution.
Objective of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The primary purpose of celebrating this day is to prevent violence against women and to create awareness about the basic human rights of women and gender equality.

What is the theme this time?
This year’s theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2022 is ‘Unite! That is, solidarity and activism to end violence against women and girls. According to the official website of the United Nations, this campaign will run for 16 days starting from 25 November. It will end on 10 December, the day of International Human Rights Day.
