There is a lot of potential in the field of opium processing in terms of income and profits. With the opening of this sector to private companies, a big change is expected. Pharmaceutical companies will be greatly benefited by the entry of private companies in the field of opium processing.

Till now the rules of opium processing in India have been very strict. This work is very centralized and at present, about 700 tonnes of alkaloids are extracted every year by processing opium in two government factories located in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. There is a lot of demand for alkaloids, especially codeine phosphate, in the country and government factories are unable to meet this demand. That’s why it has to be imported.

moneycontrol According to a report, the government has awarded a tender to Bajaj Healthcare for the supply of alkaloids and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) found in opium. Bajaj will process the opium and extract alkaloids like morphine and codeine from them and give them to the government. The government will supply them to pharma companies. Now in future Bajaj Healthcare will also produce 500 tonnes of alkaloids every year.

Anil C Jain, Joint Managing Director, Bajaj Healthcare said that the opium processing business in India is more than Rs 1000 crore. The government produces 500-700 tonnes. But the demand is high. In this, the EBIDTA margin is in the range of 20-25 per cent. The government imports opium from foreign countries to meet the demand. At the same time, government officials say that many types of alkaloids are needed in India. But the demand for codeine phosphate is the highest. The production in government factories is not able to meet the total demand, so alkaloids are imported.

Farming is done under the supervision of Narcotics Bureau
India is one of the few countries in the world where opium is cultivated within the legal framework. The Central Narcotics Bureau at Gwalior regulates the cultivation of opium in the country. The bureau itself gives license to the farmers for cultivation of opium, monitors and controls the crop. It also buys the produce from the licensed farmers there, after which this opium is sent to Ghazipur in UP and Neemuch factories in Madhya Pradesh. Is. Some opium is also exported.

Opium contains 80 alkaloids
Opium latex contains 80 alkaloids, including morphine and codeine. These are used to treat severe pain. Morphine is the most potent pain reliever derived from opium. Codeine is used in cough syrups and has mild pain relieving properties. Opium alkaloids are also misused. Morphine is chemically modified to make heroin from opium.
