The Income Tax Department has fixed the deadline of March 31, 2023, which has only 4 days left to end. According to the Income Tax Department, till now about 2 crore PAN holders have not linked with Aadhaar. However, there is relief news for such pan holders. An Income Tax official has claimed that the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking may be extended once again. The Income Tax Department will soon issue a notification in this regard.

An official associated with the matter said that the Income Tax Department may issue a notification in this regard soon. The purpose of this is to give some more time to the cardholders to link. The Income Tax Department says that all taxpayers who do not fall in the exempted category, it is necessary to link their PAN with Aadhaar before March 31. At present, this work can be done by paying a fee of Rs 1000.

Deadline extended earlier also
Even before this, the government has extended the deadline for Aadhaar-PAN linking several times. Before March 31, 2022, this work was completely free. After April 1, 2022, a fee of Rs 500 started being charged for this work, whereas after July 1, the fee has become Rs 1000. At present, PAN-Aadhaar linking is being done till March 31 on this fee.

Why is it important to link Aadhaar with PAN?
Under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, it is necessary to link Aadhaar number with all PANs issued before July 1, 2017, and this work can be accomplished only by PAN-Aadhaar linking. The government had told Parliament in July last year that so far a total of 61,73,16,313 people have been issued PAN cards. Out of this, 46,70,66,691 people have linked their PAN with Aadhaar.

3 categories have got exemption
The Income Tax Department has exempted 3 types of people from linking PAN and Aadhaar. Apart from the citizens of the states of Assam, Jammu-Kashmir and Meghalaya, non-resident Indians ie NRIs are also included in this. Apart from this, citizens above 80 years of age have also been exempted from linking PAN-Aadhaar. PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory for all except these categories.
