Loco pilots running trains of Indian Railways are not required to get a driving license to run trains from anywhere before recruitment, nor are licenses made for loco pilots anywhere in the country. Railway recruits Assistant Loco Pilot. Then by training the recruited youth in the train driving school, they make them capable of driving the train.

This is how loco pilots are made
Recruitment to the post of Assistant Loco Driver is done by the Railway Recruitment Board. This appointment is done after written test, interview and medical test. Assistant Loco Pilot recruited youths are sent to the training school. In the training school, they are trained to run the engine of the train. Here they are not only trained to run the train, but are also given complete information about the engine, rail tracks and coaches of the train. After the training, a test is taken by the Divisional Mechanical Engineer or Divisional Electrical Engineer. Competency certificate is awarded to those who pass it. After getting this certificate, they are given the opportunity to run the train.

goods train has to run first
Assistance is not given to the loco pilot to run the passenger train directly. First they are given to run the goods train. This is done because there are thousands of passengers in the passenger train. Keeping in view the safety of passengers, only experienced loco pilots are allowed to operate them. After running the goods train, the assistant loco pilot is given to run the train under the supervision of the loco pilot in the passenger train. They are allowed to drive the train independently only after gaining experience of running the train under such supervision for some time.
