At the age of 9, he went on a pilgrimage

Swaroopanand Saraswati was born on 2 September 1924 in Dighori village of Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh. Born in a Brahmin family, Swaroopanand ji was given the name Pothiram Upadhyay in childhood by his parents. Swaroopanand ji left the house at the age of just 9 and went on a journey of religion. Received the education of Vedas and scriptures under the guidance of Swami Karpatri Maharaj in Kashi.

Jail sentence served in freedom fight

Shankaracharya actively participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 at the age of 19. This is the reason why he came to be known as a revolutionary monk. Shankaracharya, who became a freedom fighter, had to undergo a jail term of 9 months in Varanasi and 6 months in Madhya Pradesh in the fight for freedom.

It is said that Swami Swaroopanand meditated on a rock for 12 years at Paramhansi Ganga Ashram located at Jhoteshwar in Narsinghpur district. In 1950, Swami Swaroopanand took initiation of Dand Sanyasi and in 1981 he was made Shankaracharya of Dwarka and Jyotirmath. He came to be called the religious guru of the Hindus. Shankaracharya Swaroopanand also fought a long legal battle for the construction of Ram temple. Shankaracharya had also contributed in the Ganga Seva Abhiyan. Also, he was the first Satyagrahi of the cow protection movement.

He breathed his last on 11 September 2022 at Paramhansi Ganga Ashram located at Jhoteshwar in Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh. He will be given Bhoomi Samadhi in the ashram itself.
