New Delhi. The government is now contemplating to take some drastic steps to check the increasing cases of online fraud in the country. The government can further tighten the rules for issuing a new SIM card and opening a bank account. The intention of the government is to thoroughly investigate all the information related to the person taking the mobile SIM and opening the bank account, so that the documents of any other person cannot be used for these two purposes.
CNBC Voice According to a report, it may be made mandatory for telecom operators and banks to do physical verification of the customer. At present, whenever someone makes an application for opening a bank account and getting a SIM, it is verified by taking details from Aadhaar through online e-KYC. At the same time, the account of companies is also opened only with the certificate of incorporation.

Fraud has increased
Fraud cases in banks have increased rapidly in the last few years. Apart from this, by taking mobile SIM on fake documents, it is also being used a lot in carrying out criminal activities. This is happening because of easy availability of SIM card and opening of bank account. According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the amount involved in bank fraud cases stood at Rs 41,000 crore in 2021-22.

According to information received from sources by CNBC Awaaz, the government is now preparing to make changes in the process of issuing a new SIM card and opening a bank account. Now the government is considering to tighten the KYC rules. Under this, the government can make the physical verification of the customer mandatory. This means that the facility of opening a bank account and taking a mobile SIM, which is currently being given through Aadhaar verification, may be closed.

The government can soon ask the telecom operators and banks to implement the new rules. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also held a review meeting with the Ministry of Finance and Telecom on this issue. The roadmap for this decision is reported to be discussed in the meeting.
