Babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, a condition called trisomy. This extra chromosome affects the development of the child’s body and brain. This can cause both mental and physical challenges for the baby.

About 6000 babies are born with this condition in the USA every year. Thousands of its cases come to the fore in India as well. The physical and mental development of children suffering from this disorder is slow and due to this they have to face a lot of challenges.

Down syndrome is a life-long condition. It cannot be completely eradicated by any treatment. Early detection helps children with Down syndrome improve their physical and intellectual abilities. Children with Down syndrome may also need extra support or attention in school. There is no way to prevent Down syndrome. If you are at high risk of having a child with Down syndrome or you already have a child with Down syndrome, women can consult a genetic counselor before becoming pregnant.
