How did Maa Durga get the name Skandmata?

According to mythological belief, there was a demon named Tarakasur, who had done severe penance to please Brahmaji and pleased with his harsh penance, Brahma appeared to him. Tarakasur asked for a boon from Brahmaji to be immortal, but on this Brahmaji explained to Tarakasur that the one who has taken birth is sure that he will have to die. On this matter Tarakasur had asked for the boon of death at the hands of Shiva’s son because he thought that Shivaji would never get married and if there was no marriage there would be no son and no one would ever be able to kill him. On getting a boon from Brahmaji, Tarakasur started torturing people and all the people went to Shiva and prayed to Tarakasur to free them. After this Shiva married Parvati and son Kartikeya was born. Kartikeya killed the demon Tarakasura when he grew up and since then she is known as Skandmata due to being the mother of Lord Skanda i.e. Kartikeya.
