Afghanistan vs New Zealand Greater Noida Test: It has been three days since the Afghanistan vs New Zealand match in Greater Noida, but not even a single ball has been bowled yet. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next two days. Meanwhile, this match has become historic for Test cricket even without the match taking place. It happens only rarely that such a sight is seen continuously for the first three days of a Test. This has happened many times before, but the last time it happened was about 16 years ago. The memories of that Test match have once again become fresh.
The day’s game was canceled in the morning itself
The Afghanistan vs New Zealand match could not start even on the third day today i.e. Wednesday. The interesting thing is that three days have passed, but there was not enough time for the toss to take place. On the second day of the match on Tuesday, it did not rain during the day, but the ground was not in a condition for the match to take place, so it was cancelled. Meanwhile, there was hope that the match could take place on the third day, Wednesday, even if it was late or early. But this hope seemed to be fading away when it rained heavily for about two to three hours on Tuesday evening. After this, it started raining again at around 7 am on Wednesday. Seeing this, umpires Sharf-ud-Daula and Kumar Dharmasena had to declare the cancellation of the third day’s match as well. It had rained so much that there was no possibility of the match starting under any circumstances. Meanwhile, the bad news is that the weather of Noida is likely to remain the same in the coming days as well, i.e. it should not be a surprise if the entire match gets washed away in the rain.
Before this when the match was not held for the first three days
The first time a Test match did not see a single ball being bowled for the first three days was in 2008. This match was played between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Mirpur in 2008. However, the match was played on the fourth and fifth days. Something similar was seen happening in 2016 as well, when New Zealand played a Test match with South Africa in Durban. However, the match was bowled on the first two days and not a single ball was bowled on the last three days. Now it will be interesting to see if this Test can be included in those historic matches in which not a single ball was bowled for the entire five days and the match was declared cancelled. So far, this has happened a total of seven times in the history of Test cricket, the last time the match was cancelled without a single ball being bowled was in 1998.
The match is not part of the World Test Championship
This match does not have any special significance, because it is not a part of the World Test Championship. Only the top 9 teams are participating in the ICC WTC. New Zealand is included in this, but Afghanistan is not a part of this club. But still this is an international match, whose statistics will be added to the players’ account. Now it can only be hoped that some game will be played in the remaining days. But now it seems certain that even if the match takes place, it is almost impossible to get a result. Meanwhile, the test may not have taken place, but it has definitely attracted everyone’s attention.
