The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed its desire to work with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include cricket in the Youth Olympics in 2030, Cricbuzz reports. The ICC statement builds on the Indian government’s announcement last year, which revealed its plans to bid for the 2030 Youth Olympics in Mumbai in addition to the 2036 Olympics.

Vivek Gopalan proposed an idea to ICC’s General Manager Development William Glenwright via email. Glenwright, who found the suggestion promising, replied to the email saying it was a good idea and we could consider it. The email between Gopalan and Glenwright included ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, Wasim Khan, Claire Furlong and Chris Tetley among others in the CC. Gopalan has argued that cricket has a strong claim in the Youth Olympic Games, as Mumbai has bid to host the 2030 Youth Olympic Games. He has also written to the ICC official that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not yet publicly announced India’s desire to host both the 2030 Youth Olympic Games and the 2036 Olympics.
Including cricket in Youth Olympics is an easy task
In the email sent to the ICC representative, a strong case was made for the inclusion of cricket in the Youth Olympic Games. The message emphasised that all top sports, including rugby sevens, are part of the Youth Olympics. Why not cricket? The inclusion of cricket in the Youth Olympic Games will revolutionise grassroots cricket globally, especially among ICC Associates. The mail further stated that now that the ICC has built strong ties with the IOC and the IOC believes that the “cricket brand” can enhance the “Olympic brand”, it will not be a difficult task to convince the IOC to include cricket as a core sport in the Youth Olympics.
