New Zealand women’s team captain Sophie Devine has decided to step down from captaincy in this format after the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the UAE. This mega event was earlier scheduled to be held in Bangladesh but in view of the deteriorating situation there, the ICC has decided to hold it in the UAE from October 3 to October 20, whose new schedule has also been released. The New Zealand team has got a place in Group A along with India, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Kiwi women’s team will start their campaign with a match against the Indian team on October 4.
Sophie Devine took this decision to manage the workload
Sophie Devine has so far handled the responsibility of captaincy in 56 matches for the New Zealand team in Women’s T20 International. At the same time, she has taken this decision to manage her workload, in which she will continue to handle the responsibility of captaining the team in ODI format till the World Cup to be held in India next year. Regarding her decision to leave the captaincy, Sophie said that I got the opportunity to captain the New Zealand team in both formats, which is a matter of great honor for me. Captaincy also comes with additional responsibility, which I enjoy completely, but sometimes it can also be challenging. Getting away from T20 captaincy will reduce my workload a bit, so that I can focus more on my role and also help the other captain prepare for the future.
New Zealand team will be announced for the World Cup on September 10
On the decision of not leaving the captaincy in ODIs, Sophie Devine said that I am not ready to leave the ODI captaincy yet. But I will not stay forever, so I think stepping down from the captaincy of one format at a time will give the next captain time to settle down. 34-year-old Sophie Devine is currently recovering from a leg injury and she can return to the field in the three-match T20 series against Australia. New Zealand will announce its team for the Women’s T20 World Cup on September 10.
