The name of the new chairman of the International Cricket Council was announced on 27 August, whose responsibility will be taken over by the current secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jay from December 1, 2024. Jay Shah was elected unopposed for this post, in which his first term will be of 2 years and again it is expected to be extended for two more years. Jay Shah will also have to face many big challenges as the responsibility of ICC Chairman, the biggest of which is the Champions Trophy to be held in early 2025. At the same time, we are going to tell you about 5 such big challenges which Jay Shah will have to face as ICC Chairman and also deal with them.

Champions Trophy to be hosted by Pakistan

All eyes are currently on the Champions Trophy to be held in the year 2025, which is to be hosted by Pakistan. At the same time, India has already made its stand clear that it will not go to Pakistan to play the Champions Trophy matches. In such a situation, successfully organizing the matches of the Indian team or the Champions Trophy itself at any other venue is going to be a major challenge for Jai Shah. However, before Jai Shah takes over the post, it is expected that the schedule of the Champions will be announced.

Saving Test cricket amid the growing popularity of T20

Saving cricket’s oldest format Test is going to be the biggest responsibility of Jay Shah during his tenure as ICC chairman. Due to the ever-increasing popularity of T20 cricket and franchise-based leagues in it, many big players are not showing interest in playing Test cricket. In such a situation, Jay Shah will have to work very hard as ICC chairman to save and revive this format in Test-playing countries. If we look at Test cricket in the last few years, no country other than India, Australia and England is showing much interest in playing it.

To give recognition to cricket at global level

Since the advent of T20 cricket, it has become very easy to promote this game in smaller countries. According to the latest data released by the ICC, about 104 countries, including 12 countries playing all three formats, have been given the status of playing T20 International. Teams like Uganda, Nepal, USA and Oman also participated in the recently held T20 World Cup. In such a situation, it is very important to take it to other countries of the world so that cricket can also be made a global sport like football.

ODI World Cup to be held in 2027

After the ODI World Cup held in India in the year 2023, fans are also in a state of great doubt about the popularity of this format. Despite the Champions Trophy being held next year, the Indian team has played only 3 ODI matches in the year 2024. In such a situation, organizing the ODI World Cup to be held in the year 2027 is not going to be easy. This mega event will be jointly hosted by three countries, which include Namibia apart from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Where for the first time ICC’s major event has been hosted, the ICC should also prepare in advance about the pitch and the facilities available in the stadium so that there is no disruption in the organization of the matches.

Successfully organizing cricket event in Olympics 2028

The Olympic Games will be held in Los Angeles in the year 2028 and cricket will also return in it, in which matches will be played in T20 format for both men and women. In such a situation, organizing cricket matches in the Olympics and keeping complete coordination with the Olympic Committee is going to be a big responsibility for Jai Shah as this will also help the sport to get a separate identity at the global level.
