Cricket Australia has once again given a big blow to the Afghanistan team and decided to cancel the bilateral T20 series with them. The Australian Board had earlier canceled the one-match Test series between the two countries in 2021 and proposed to replace it with a three-match ODI series in March 2023, which was later cancelled. Now the Australian cricket team was to play a 3-match T20 series with Afghanistan at a natural venue in the month of August under the Future Tour Programme, which Cricket Australia has now decided to postpone.
Women not getting equal rights became the reason for cancellation of the series
The reason given by Cricket Australia for canceling the T20 series is to deprive the women’s team of the rights to play cricket in Afghanistan, which was decided after the change of government there. Along with postponing this series, Cricket Australia also did not give any information as to when these matches will be played. In a statement issued by Cricket Australia, he said that update regarding the schedule of our Australian men’s team, Cricket Australia will continue its commitment to the participation of women and girls in cricket. The Board will also work on the plan to conduct this bilateral series in collaboration with ICC and Afghanistan Cricket Board in future. Cricket Australia has been continuously talking to the Australian Government on this matter for the last one year, in which we have received advice from them that we should stick to our decision until the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan improves.
Only 2 matches took place between the two teams in the last 2 years
Only two matches have been played between Australia and Afghanistan in the last two years. The last time Cricket Australia canceled the series with Afghanistan, they had made it clear that they would not boycott playing Afghanistan in ICC events. There is a difference between playing a bilateral series against Afghanistan, which is under the control of Cricket Australia, and playing a World Cup tournament because that is an ICC event and over which they have no control.
