Sachin Tendulkar and Joe Root

Joe Root 34th Test Tone: Joe Root has created a new record in the history of England’s Test cricket by scoring centuries in both innings of the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka. Joe Root has now become the batsman who has scored the most 34 centuries in Test cricket for England. Earlier this record was in the name of Alastair Cook. Root scored 143 runs in the first innings of the Lord’s Test and 103 runs in the second innings. In this way, he broke Alastair Cook’s record of 33 centuries.

Test number-1 batsman Root has now reached the joint sixth position in the list of batsmen who have scored 34 or more centuries in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar (51 Test centuries) is at the top of this list. It will be very difficult for Root to break this record of Sachin because he still has to do the big feat of scoring 17 centuries to reach the figure of 51 Test centuries. However, given the excellent form Root is in right now, it does not seem difficult for him to reach the top-3.

Sachin’s record is in danger

Joe Root made his Test debut for England against India in Nagpur in December 2012. Since his debut till 2021, Root has scored only 17 centuries in 117 innings, but in less than 4 years between 2021 and 2024, he has scored 17 centuries in just 88 innings. Seeing this dangerous form of Root, Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most Test runs is in big danger.

Root so far

Actually, Sachin Tendulkar scored 15921 runs in 329 innings of 200 test matches with the help of 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. At the same time, 33-year-old Root has scored 12377 runs in 265 innings of 145 test matches with the help of 34 centuries and 64 half-centuries. That means Root needs 3544 runs to break Sachin’s record. Looking at the pace at which Root is growing, Sachin’s record can be broken but for that the English batsman will have to score runs at the same pace for the next 3 years. However, it cannot be said when the batsman’s form will deteriorate. In such a situation, it will be interesting to see whether Root is able to break Sachin’s record or not. If he can even come close to Sachin’s runs, it will be a big achievement in itself.
