On the 9th day of Paris Paralympics, 21 year old para athlete Praveen Kumar from India succeeded in winning the gold medal in the final event of high jump T64. This is India’s 26th medal as well as sixth gold medal in Paris Paralympics. Praveen Kumar won the gold medal with an excellent high jump of 2.08 meters. This is India’s 11th medal in the high jump event in the history of Paralympics. 21 year old para athlete Praveen Kumar from Noida, Uttar Pradesh became the second Indian after Mariyappan Thangavelu to win a gold medal in the high jump event in Paralympics.
Praveen Kumar defeated para athletes from USA and Uzbekistan
In the T64 final event of high jump, Praveen Kumar defeated para athletes from America and Uzbekistan. While Praveen jumped 2.08 meters high, American para athlete Derek Lokident won the silver medal with a high jump of 2.06 meters. Uzbekistan’s Temurbek Giyazov succeeded in winning the bronze medal by jumping 2.03 meters. Praveen Kumar had earlier won the silver medal in the Tokyo Paralympics.
The most successful Paralympics for India so far
With Praveen Kumar winning the gold medal, this is India’s best performance in the history of Paralympic Games. India won a total of 19 medals in Tokyo Paralympics, including 5 gold medals. This time in Paralympics, while India has been successful in winning 26 medals so far, this is also a gold medal. Avni Lakhera, Nitesh Kumar, Sumit Antil, Harvinder Singh, Dharambir and Praveen Kumar have won gold medals for India in Paris Paralympics.
