England’s dashing batsman Joe Root has created a new record by scoring a historic 34th Test century against Sri Lanka in the second innings of the Lord’s Test. Root has now become the batsman scoring the most centuries in Tests for England. He broke Alastair Cook’s record of 33 centuries. Earlier, he had also achieved the feat of scoring a century in the first innings of the same Test match. Root has now set a new record in terms of scoring the most centuries in Tests. He has equaled Sunil Gavaskar, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara and Younus Khan.

Joe Root has become only the third batsman from England to score a century in both innings of a Test match at Lord’s. Earlier, this record was in the name of Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan. He is also the first batsman to do so for England at Lord’s after 20 years. Before Root, the last big record of a century being scored by an England batsman in both innings of a Test at Lord’s was in 2004.
Not only this, this is the fourth time that a batsman has achieved the feat of scoring a century in both innings of a Test match at Lord’s. West Indies’ George Headley was the first to create history by scoring a century in both innings of a Test match at the Mecca of cricket against England in June 1939. Former England cricketer Graham Gooch achieved this feat at Lord’s against India in July 1990. Former England captain Michael Vaughan scored a Test century in both innings at the historic ground in July 2004.

Joe Root has become the highest run scorer at Lord’s thanks to this century. Root broke Graham Gooch’s 30-year-old record. Root now has 2017 runs in 40 innings at Lord’s. Whereas, Gooch had scored 2015 runs in 39 innings at this ground.
