A single Test match is being organized between New Zealand and Afghanistan. This match will be played from Monday, September 9 at Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground in India. In this match, former New Zealand cricket team captain Kane Williamson is very close to achieving a historic feat. He needs only 72 runs to make this record and with this he will become the greatest batsman in New Zealand’s cricket history. In fact, with this match, Williamson has a chance to become the highest run scorer in international cricket from New Zealand.

Williamson’s journey so far

Kane Williamson is counted among the best batsmen of today. It was under Williamson’s captaincy that New Zealand won the 2021 ICC World Test Championship title. He has scored 18,128 runs so far in his career of 358 international matches. He is just 72 runs away from breaking former captain Ross Taylor’s record of 18,199 runs. With this achievement, he will further strengthen his position as one of New Zealand’s most brilliant players in international cricket. At the same time, he will also become the highest run-scorer for the Kiwi team.

Ross Taylor played 450 matches for New Zealand in his 16-year international career and scored a total of 18,199 runs, including 7,683 runs in Test cricket, 8,607 runs in ODIs and 1,909 runs in T20 Internationals. On the other hand, Williamson has already scored more Test runs than Taylor. He has scored 8,743 runs in Test cricket, 6,810 runs in ODIs and 2,575 runs in T20 Internationals. These figures prove that Williamson’s performance has been excellent in all formats.

More challenges ahead for Williamson

After the only Test match against Afghanistan, Kane Williamson has a total of five more Test matches to play in the subcontinent. The New Zealand team will first tour Sri Lanka for a two-Test series, after which it will play three Test matches against India. The first Test match in India will be played on October 16 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, while the second will be held in Pune (October 24-28) and the third in Mumbai (November 1-5). In these upcoming matches, Williamson will have the opportunity to improve his record even more.
