National Sports Day 2024: National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August in the country. This day is the birth anniversary of the great player Major Dhyanchand, who is known as the magician of hockey. Major Dhyanchand has played an important role in making the country win hockey in many important tournaments including the Olympics, in which there was a time when it was very difficult to defeat the Indian hockey team. In view of Major Dhyanchand’s dedication towards the game and his contribution, today has been declared as National Sports Day in the country.

On the National Sports Day celebrated in the country on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, people are also told about the importance of sports in their lives, so that everyone can actively participate in sports. Players who have made significant contributions in various sports are also honored on National Sports Day so that more youth can get inspiration and come forward to participate in sports. Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 and was recognized all over the world as the magician of hockey. Major Dhyan Chand won gold medals for the country in hockey in the Olympics held in 1928, 1932 and 1936 before independence. Major Dhyan Chand scored more than 400 goals in his 22-year career.
Major Dhyan Chand’s son unveiled his statue in Madhya Pradesh
On the occasion of National Sports Day, Major Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Kumar unveiled his father’s statue in Jabalpur city of Madhya Pradesh. This day is also celebrated to remember the sports legends of the country, who have given the country a distinct identity through their significant contribution in various sports. On National Sports Day, National Sports Awards are given at Rashtrapati Bhavan in which players and coaches who have made outstanding contributions in the field of sports are honored.
