South African cricket has always been surrounded by controversies regarding global issues. On many occasions in the past, players and teams have even faced suspension over various issues. Now once again something similar has been seen in South African cricket, but this time action has been taken not against a player of the senior team but of the Under 19 team. In fact, in view of the threat of possible protests and violence in relation to the 18-year-old pro-Israel player, South Africa has taken precautionary measures and removed captain David Tiger from his post a week before the start of the Under-19 World Cup.
During a speech in 2023, Tiger, who is Jewish, dedicated his Rising Star Award to Israeli soldiers amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Since then, Teiger’s stance has not been well received.
South Africa Board said this
Cricket South Africa said that as is the case with all such events, Cricket South Africa has been receiving regular security and risk updates in relation to the World Cup. We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza may take place at match venues. We have also been advised that they may focus on the captaincy of South Africa Under-19 captain, David Teiger, and there is a risk that violence may also occur.
Decision taken due to safety of team and fans
The statement further said, CSA’s primary duty is to protect the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup. Keeping in mind the safety of the players and fans, the captain of the South Africa Under-19 team has been removed from his post. CSA also said that the new captain will be announced in time but Tiger will remain an integral part of the team despite being removed from the captaincy. However, at this time, according to CSA, this was the best decision in the best interest of Tiger and the team. While the protests outside the stadium were just one such incident, CSA expects the protests to multiply in the coming days.
