The cricket world was surprised by Shikhar Dhawan’s big announcement on the morning of 24 August. Shikhar Dhawan shared a video on Instagram and announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Dhawan was out of Team India for the last 2 years and the possibility of his return seemed very low. Meanwhile, the news of Dhawan’s retirement gave a huge shock to cricket fans.
Dhawan may not be seen playing for Team India anymore, but the records made by him will always remain in the minds of the fans. After his international debut in 2010, Dhawan spent nearly 12 years in international cricket. During this time, he scored more than 10,000 runs in all three formats. Dhawan always had a passion for scoring a lot of runs in ICC tournaments. This is the reason why he also became very famous as ‘Mr. ICC’.
Back to back successes in ICC Champions Trophy
Whenever Dhawan played in the ICC Champions Trophy, he scored a lot of runs with his bat. This is the reason why he is the highest run scorer from India in the history of Champions Trophy. Not only this, he is the third highest run scorer in the world overall in this tournament. He scored 701 runs in 10 innings at an average of 77.88. During this, he scored 3 centuries and 3 half-centuries.
Dhawan was the highest run scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy played in 2013. Due to his brilliant performance, Team India was successful in winning the title by defeating England in the final. In this tournament, Gabbar scored 363 runs in 5 innings of 5 matches at an amazing average of 90.75. For this, he was also awarded the Player of the Series award. After 4 years, once again Dhawan’s bat spoke loudly in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. He scored 338 runs in 5 matches at an average of 67.60 and was the top run scorer of the tournament. Although this time he could not win the title for the team, but he made the record of scoring the most runs in 2 consecutive Champions Trophy. No other batsman has been able to make this record till date and there is little possibility of this record being broken in the future too.
