According to a report released by the ICC on Wednesday, the ODI World Cup held in India in 2023 generated an ‘economic impact’ of $ 1.39 billion, in which the tourism sector benefited the most.

ODI World Cup was played in 10 cities

The ODI World Cup was played in 10 cities of India from 5 October to 19 November 2023. These include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune. The ICC report said that the ODI World Cup 2023 was the largest cricket World Cup ever. Which contributed to development and proved to be important for India’s economy.

India got economic benefit of Rs 11637 crore

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement that the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, which has brought an economic benefit of $ 1.39 billion (Rs 11,637 crore) to India. The tourism sector in the host cities generated revenue of $ 861.4 million, which includes travel, food and accommodation. Because a large number of domestic and foreign tourists arrived for the matches. The report claimed that the World Cup was watched by a record 12 lakh 50 thousand spectators in the stadium and about 75 percent of them came to watch the ICC’s 50-over match for the first time.

Tourism sector got a boost

According to the ICC statement, 55 percent of the foreign fans interviewed had already visited India regularly, while 19 percent of foreign fans visited India for the first time due to the World Cup. Foreign travelers visited many tourist destinations during their stay, which resulted in an economic impact of $ 281.2 million.

Nearly 68 per cent of the people said that they would recommend India as a tourist destination to their friends and family members in the future, thereby further improving India’s global image. The report said that more than 48,000 full and part-time jobs were created by direct involvement in organising the tournament as well as by other organisations in the hospitality sector.
