Cricket West Indies (CWI) has upgraded Shamar Joseph’s franchise contract to a CWI International Retainer contract. The Windies Cricket Board made this announcement after Joseph led West Indies to their first win in Test cricket against Australia since 2003. West Indies’ emphatic win over Australia in the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane was their first win on Australian soil in 27 years. The two-time ODI World Cup winners last won a Test in Australia at the WACA, Perth in February 1997.

Strong performance against Australia

Joseph played an important role in West Indies’ victory in the second test. He devastated the Australian batting order and played a vital role in his team’s victory with figures of 7/68 in the second innings. The young fast bowler from a remote village in Guyana has shown extraordinary talent and steadfast dedication which compelled CWI to give him the nod.

What did the CWI director say?

Enoch Lewis, Director of Cricket West Indies and Chairman of the Cricket Development and Performance Committee, said in a statement: “As excited as we are, it is also important to upgrade Shamar Joseph to a CWI International Retainer contract. His exceptional talent and steadfast dedication will be a great addition to our team at the Gabba. “He was instrumental in the side’s recent victory, and such a performance deserves its due recognition. He has not just been rewarded with a retained contract, he has earned it.”

CWI director, Miles Bascombe, also praised Joseph’s ability and announced the board’s decision to offer a franchise contract to another West Indies fast bowler, Chemar Holder. Shamar’s promotion to a CWI International Retainer contract reflects his potential and the bright future of West Indies cricket. We have also offered Kemar Holder a franchise contract as we work to secure one of the best fast bowling talents.
