The Ireland team will play a 2-match T20 series against South Africa from September 27 and after this a series of three ODIs will also be played between the two teams. The team for both the series has been announced by the Irish Cricket Board. In this, the selectors have taken a surprising decision and have not given Ireland Test team captain Andy Balbirnie a place in the team for the T20 series. The biggest reason behind his exclusion from the team has been his very poor performance in the T20 format so far this year. In the absence of Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker can take over the responsibility of opening with Paul Stirling.
We want to focus on our top order in T20
Regarding the team announced for the T20 and ODI series against South Africa, Ireland team’s chief selector Andrew White said that one thing we want to focus on on this tour is our top order in T20. We are trying to see something new in it, due to which we had to take the decision to exclude Andrew Balbirnie. Even though there are only 2 matches in the upcoming T20 series, we want to give some new opportunities so that the level of performance can be increased. At the same time, Andrew Balbirnie has got a place in the team for the ODI series and he will take the responsibility of opening the innings with Paul Stirling. Balbirnie has played in 12 T20 matches so far this year and has scored runs at an average of just 24.83.
